What Does Curt Echo In-Line Brake Controller Pull Power From

Question:

HI, I have one of these units set up on a semi tractor. Pulling off the HD trailer plug, through a HD to RV converter. SEE PICS. Trailer brakes are electric over hydraulic. Works great except when I try to use manual override button. It instantly overloads and I lose all lights on truck and have to turn off all lights to reset. Can you tell me what wire does this unit pull power from to actuate the brakes? aux trailer power? Tail light? Turn/stop? P.S. I can send you more pics and a wire diagram of how I have this wired if you like. Thanks

The Curt Echo In-Line Wireless Brake Controller # C79DR is designed to be plugged in-line with your USCAR connector that pulls power from the 12 volt power pin. It is designed to be used with a standard 7-way and not a commercial 7-way. The pin-outs are different on a commercial 7-way, so my best guess is it is trying to pull too much power from that pin when using the manual override and that is causing the issue. You may be able to remedy this by re-pinning your commercial 7-way so the 12 volt power is on the pin in the 1 o'clock position; I have linked an article on trailer wiring below, and about 1/4 of the way down it shows the standard pins for 7-ways which may help.
