To find the correct replacement mounting brackets for your running boards I would need to know the brand and model number of the boards to find the correct hardware.
If that's not an option then you'd be looking at custom making some brackets with a fabricator or purchasing an entirely new running board kit for your 1997 GMC 3500, like the Westin PRO TRAXX Oval Nerf Bars # 21-53560.
