Can A 4-Pole Wiring Harness Be Spliced Into A 6-Pole Socket To Flat Tow A 2013 Honda Fit

Question:

I have a 2013 Honda Fit Sport. I have a Roadmaster Sterling Tow Bar with the built in channels. I need to wire my Taillights for towing. I have settled on purchasing this wiring harness. My question is can I remove the flat 4-wire plug and install the 6-wire plug from the straight cord kit #RM-98146-7? Reason I ask is that when you purchase kit RM-152-98146-7 all you have is the 4-wire harness with the kit that wires onto the 6-wire plug. Does the cord have 7-wires then reduces down to 6-wires on the other end? I would like to not alter my original equipment wiring or my Taillights, but I need the straight cord.

While it is possible to cut the 4-pole connector off of the Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles # HM56302 and wire it into a 6-pole socket, you would be doing yourself an IMMENSE disservice using any kind of plug-in tow bar wiring as they consistently fail.

We get A LOT of troubleshooting questions here for plug-in kits and it always ends up requiring a complete replacement of the wiring harness because with these kits the parts are not replaceable. Save yourself the time and hassle of having to rewire the whole vehicle and go with the Roadmaster 4-Diode Universal Wiring Kit # RM-152-98146-7.

It can be scary splicing into vehicle wiring, but the two seconds it'll take you to actually do it will be well worth it to avoid scratching your head later on when the tail lights don't work and you're stuck under the vehicle tracing the wires for damage and using a multimeter to see where the power drop is. I've attached a video below where Ryan will walk you through the installation process to make it even easier.

If I still didn't convince you to switch away from the plug-in kit then you'll just need to cut the connector off and insert the wires into their appropriate terminals (pictured below) and use a straight cord/socket kit like # RM-98146-7. I've also attached our help article on wiring that has a wealth of information to help you out. If you need any help picking out any of the other components needed to flat tow your 2013 Honda Fit then let me know and I'll give you my best recommendations.
