In order to convert a 4-way to a 7-way on a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 you'll need an adapter, the 4 to 7-Way with 4-Way Adapter part # ETBC7. This adapter not only allows for both a 4 and 7-way connection but it also provides the rest of the wires and circuit breakers etc. that you'll need to make the rest of the connections. The two 4-ways simply plug into one another, the white wire goes to ground, the black wire goes to the vehicle battery, the blue wire goes into the cab for an electric trailer brake controller, and the yellow wire just get tapped up.
If the trailer has brakes then you will still need a trailer brake controller to operate them for which I recommend the Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller part # TK90160.
