When installing a brake controller on your 2006 Dodge Dakota you'll need to use a circuit tester like the Hook Probe Circuit Tester # PTW2993 to find the cold side of the stop light switch. You'll need to look for wiring around the brake pedal area and then test each wire to see what gets hot ONLY when the brake pedal is pressed.
Once you know which wire is the cold side of the stop light switch then you can connect that wire from your brake controller for operation. If you don't already have a brake controller I recommend using the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885 because it's simple, yet effective and easy to use. You will need to connect the wiring from the included pigtail to the following functions:
Blue - 7-Way Output to Trailer
Black - 12V Power
White - Ground
Red - COLD Side of Stop Light Switch (only gets hot when brake pedal is pressed)
Attached is a review video for you to check out.
