Should I Use 1/8" or 3/16" Thick Butyl Tape for RV Side Window Installation/Repair

Question:

I need to purchase Butyl tape to seal side compartments and windows to a 1998 Sunline Solaris T-2970 travel trailer I am restoring but I dont know if I should use 3/4 x 1/8 or 3/4 x 3/16. What do you recommend?

Helpful Expert Reply:

The 1/8" thick tape is most common for side window installation and repairs so I recommend the Alpha Systems Butyl Tape for RV Weatherproofing part # AL42FJ for this. It can always be doubled up if needed. I recommend the 3/16" thick tape like the Alpha Systems Butyl Tape for RV Weatherproofing part # AL33FJ for rooftop installation and repairs. The thicker tape is sometimes needed for more uneven surfaces whereas the sides of the trailer are usually pretty smooth so you can use the thinner stuff. That said, it really doesn't matter so long as it seals properly and keeps out water.
