Yes, per the owner's manual you can flat tow your 2009 Ford Escape; just be sure to follow the procedure outlined in the owner's manual. You'll need a number of things to flat tow your '09 Escape, which I'll go ahead and list out for you:
- Base Plate Kit: Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit # 4414-3
- Tow Bar: etrailer SD Non-Binding Tow Bar # e74ZR
- Wiring Kit: Roadmaster 4-Diode Universal Wiring Kit # RM-152-98146-7
- Roadmaster Brake-Lite Relay Kit for Towed Vehicles # RM-88400
- Supplemental Braking System: Brake Buddy Classic 3 Portable Supplemental Braking System # HM39494
The Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plates are great because they have removable tabs for a clean look when you aren't flat towing. The SD tow bar is nice because it has longer arms than other options which make it easier to maneuver when towing, along with integrated safety cables and an adjustable tilting head so a high-low adapter won't be needed
The wiring kit is designed to prevent any type of electrical feedback to keep your Escape's electrical system safe, and the brake lite relay is needed to keep your brake signal from overriding your turn signal. As for the braking system, the Brake Buddy is easy to use, reliable, and as a portable system you'll be able to move it to a different vehicle should you wind up switching cars, meaning you don't have to buy a brand new braking system.
