When installing the Reese fifth wheel rail kit part # RP30035 in the bed of your 2004 GMC Sierra 1500 short bed the rear rail edge will be located 25-1/8 inches from the rear edge of the truck bed. Then you'll use your hitch to locate the front rail by setting the hitch in the rails once rear is set. This ensures the hitch can install and remove as easily as possible without binding up. This measurement is accurate for both the 6-1/2 foot and 5-1/2 foot short bed versions of your truck. The long bed is 30 inches.
