Hitch and Wiring Recommendations for 2016 Nissan Pathfinder without Tow Package
Question:
I am looking for a 2016 Nissan Pathfinder to tow a small RV, less than 3,500 pounds. I know the Pathfinder has a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds when properly equipped. I am finding some great buys on this vehicle, but they dont have the tow package. Can a towing package be installed on a Pathfinder that is not already equipped with such? I know it will need more than just adding a hitch. Can you recommend the parts Ill need?

Definitely! If you purchase a 2016 Nissan Pathfinder without a tow package, you need the proper wiring. The wiring you need is to first install a 4-way harness and then install a 7-way harness if you plan to use a brake controller.
For the 4-way, that is the splice-in kit # 119178KIT. This harness provides your trailer with basic brake light, turn signal, and running light functions. If you have a trailer with brakes, you need the additional Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way # ETBC7. By installing the # ETBC7, you prep your Pathfinder for a brake controller.
If you need a brake controller recommendation, the best option is the Curt Echo # C51180. The Echo is a proportional controller which means that it activates the trailer brakes in proportion to your vehicle's braking action. Also, the Curt Echo allows you to control the settings of your controller with the ease of your Smart device without the need of an additional plug-in harness.
For the hitch, I recommend going with the Draw-Tite - 2" # 76031. Since this hitch has a maximum gross towing capacity of 6,000 pounds, you get the weight capacity you need and fully maximize the 5,000-pound capacity of your Pathfinder.
You also need a hitch ball mount and ball like the one included with the Curt Towing Starter Kit # C45534. This kit comes with a 2" ball and a 3/4" rise or 2" drop.
I went ahead and attached some helpful videos for you to check out.
