To use a 5th wheel hitch with your 1997 Dodge Ram 2500 you'll need a base rail kit which installs in a specific area that you'll find in the instructions. If you don't already have a base rail kit then I recommend using the Reese Universal Base Rails and Installation Kit # RP30035.
You will place the back side of the rear rail 28-7/16" from the back edge of your bed for a short bed or 32-7/16" from the back edge of your bed for a long bed. This will put the approximate king pin location about 2" in front of your axle but that can vary depending on the way the 5th wheel hitch is designed.
Attached is a diagram from the linked instructions for you to look at as well as an installation video of this kit on an '02 Dodge Ram truck for you to check out.
