Weight Distribution Hitch System For a 2013 Toyota Highlander
Question:
Ive seen conflicting information about using a weight distribution hitch with a 2013 Toyota Highlander Limited, with tow package. Were about to buy a small travel trailer and the salesman wants us to get a weight distribution hitch. The owners manual for the highlander doesnt address it either way it only says sway control is needed for anything over a certain weight. Ive seen various forums saying not to use weight distribution on a highlander or any unibody vehicle, but I cant find an official recommendation either way.

To determine if you will be able to use a weight distribution hitch on your 2013 Toyota Highlander you will want to check the data tag on the receiver. This tag will tell you if your receiver is rated to be used with a weight distribution hitch. If it does not state a rated weight capacity with weight distribution it is not to be used with such.
Since the owners manual does specifically state that you cannot use a weight distribution hitch you can install the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75586 that is rated for use with a weight distribution hitch and 500lbs tongue weight with 5,000lbs max trailer capacity. Be sure to not exceed the maximum towing weights for your Highlander.
I recommend using the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System # EQ37060ET for your trailer. This system is rated for trailers with a tongue weight of 200-600lbs and a maximum trailer weight of 6,000lbs or less. Unlike some weight distribution hitches this one incorporates sway into the bars so there is no need to remove any sway bars when maneuvering your trailer. You will need a 1-7/8" 12pt Thin Walled Socket # ALL643216 to install the included 2" hitch ball.
