What Lift-Assist Kayak Carrier do You Recommend for 2 Kayaks on My 2008 Subaru Outback Wagon?

Question:

I have 2008 Subaru Outback and would like to install 2 lift assisted kayak racks on the roof. My vehicle has factory rails and crossbars. Is there any options available using my current crossbars, or do I need to install new towers and crossbars? If I cant install them on the factory crossbars, do you have a recommendation for a 2-boat setup that would be easiest to load?

Thanks so much for the photo. From the looks of your photo of your factory roof rack, the best option is to install an aftermarket roof rack on your vehicle. This is because there is a considerable amount of unusable crossbar space where the feet connect to the raised rails.

Fortunately, Thule makes a roof rack that is compatible with your raised rails after you remove your current setup. For that system, I recommend the following:

- Thule WingBar Evo Crossbars - Aluminum - Black - 47" Long # TH711220 (black) or # TH711200 (silver)
- Evo Raised Rail Feet for Thule Crossbars - Factory Raised Rails - Qty 4 # TH710401

With this setup, you not only receive more usable crossbar space, but you also receive the benefits of an extremely aerodynamic setup that ultimately leads to a quieter ride and increased fuel efficiency. As far as weight capacity, it provides you with 220 pounds.

For a great lift-assist system that works with the 47-inch crossbars, I recommend using the Malone DownLoader Kayak Carrier and TelosXL Load Assist w/ Tie-Downs # MPG114MD-351XL with an additional DownLoader # MPG114MD for the second kayak. Since both of these carriers together require 41 inches of usable crossbar space, you are good to go with your 47-inch crossbars. With these carries, you receive 4 total load straps and 4 bow/stern ties to securely transport your kayaks on your vehicle. I went ahead and attached a video that demonstrates the easy of using the TelosXL load assist with the DownLoader.
