Does Derale Series 8000 Transmission Cooler Require Draining Fluid
Question:
I have ordered a Derale D13503 transmission cooler, and downloaded the installation instructions while waiting for it to arrive. There seems to be a significant omission in the instruction, Disconnect the return transmission cooler line from the radiator. It does not discuss loss of transmission fluid, catching this, how to deal with it, etc. I am assuming there is in fact fluid loss. Do I drain my transmission fluid first, or at least the amount that drains from that location, and then either replace it or replace with new? Or is the idea to keep the hole plugged when you can, work quickly and catch the fluid when you cant? One answer on your site for a specific vehicle says to plug the hole with a rag and catch the spillage, but it isnt for my vehicle, and Im not sure how I plug a small hole with a rag, or how I install the adapter with a rag in the hole. I am sure this is no big deal and easily dealt with, but I just wanted some expert hints before starting. Thanks.

Good question but no, you do not need to drain your transmission fluid when installing the Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit # D13503.
The hole doesn't need to be plugged with a rag either - like you, I'm not 100 percent sure how that would work. You do have the right idea - basically work quickly, a drip pan isn't a bad idea, and do as much planning beforehand in regards to where the hoses are going to run, cutting them the right length, etc.
You'll need to add some more fluid after you finish installing the # D13503 but it's pretty unlikely you'll have problems losing a lot of fluid.
