Question:
The owners manual for my 2017 Camry XLE says trailer towing is not recommended, but you have trailer hitches for this vehicle with specific maximum trailer weights. Please clarify.

According to the the owner's manual online for the 2017 Toyota Camry XLE, towing a trailer is not recommended. It also does not say you can't. Ultimately, it is up to you whether or not you want to go ahead and tow a trailer, but we do not recommend going against what the manufacturer says. If you do plan on towing a trailer, I recommend checking with your local dealer first for clarity and also to see what the towing capacity of the vehicle is assuming there is one.
A trailer hitch like the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 36540 has a towing capacity of 3,500 lbs. This is simply what the hitch is capable of and has nothing to do with the vehicle capabilities. The same is true with hitches for trucks and other vehicles designed for heavy-duty towing. The hitch rating is always what the hitch is capable of. Sometimes that exceeds the vehicle towing capacity and at other times the vehicle towing capacity exceeds the capability of the hitch.
Most people using a hitch on their Camry are going to be using it for accessories and will be focused on the maximum tongue weight of 300 lbs. One way or another, it is important to make sure you do not exceed the capacity of your hitch or your vehicle whether it is towing a trailer or using a hitch mounted accessory.
