Parts Needed To Tow a Trailer with Brakes with a 2000 Dodge Van 3500
Question:
I have a 2000 ram van 3500 that has no hitch currently. I need install hitch and will be towing a 3000 lb dry equipment trailer 2100 mile trip. I anticipate it will weigh 6000 or so pounds loaded. I will need a 7 blade hook up for trailer and I will be using a prodigy controller from another vehicle so will need all wiring for controller .Do I need a sway/load control hitch if so I would like to use same one when using trailer to move cars and at that point I will have 12000 to 15000 pounds. Being used by my diesel truck. Can you give recommendations?

I have a few different trailer hitch options for a 2000 Dodge Van depending on the bumper, if you have a step bumper then we have the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 13590 but if you have the standard bumper we have the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 13015. These capacities are right at the end of your needs but they can be increased when using a weight distribution system like the Curt Weight Distribution System part # C17341. In order to add a trailer connector for a brake controller you'd first need the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness part # C55368 and then you could convert this using the Brake Controller Install Kit part # ETBC7. This has everything else you need to install a brake controller.
In order to use the Curt Weight Distribution System with a heavier trailer you would just need new spring bars.
