The Reese Elite Series 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Wiring Harness RP30871 was designed to fit Ford's puck spacing footprint so if your 2016 GMC 2500HD has a factory puck system from GM it will not fit. If you had an aftermarket puck system installed like the Under-Bed Rail and Installation Kit for Reese Elite Series 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # RP30868, then you would be able to use the RP30871.
For GM puck spacing you would instead need the Reese M5 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for Chevy/GMC Towing Prep Package # RP30895. Since you have a short bed I would only advise using a fixed hitch like this if your 5th wheel trailer has a rotating pin box to prevent the nose of the trailer from coming into contact with the cab of the truck. You would need the Sidewinder Wedge Kit # RP44FR to prevent the king pin from rotating in the jaws of this hitch.
If you don't have a rotating pin box then I recommend going with a sliding 5th wheel hitch like the B&W Companion OEM 5th Wheel Hitch w/ Slider for Chevy/GMC Towing Prep Package # BWRVK3770. I do want to note that this sliding hitch only has a 20,000lb weight capacity, as the slider base is not rated past 20K.
