Recommended 7-Way Connector for a 2019 Ford Escape
Question:
Dear Etrailer Support team, We recently purchase an Aliner Expedition camper and a 2019 Ford Escape to tow it. Unfortunately the towing package only includes a 4-pin connector which cannot control the trailer’s breaking system and the charging system which requires a 9-pin connector. We are planning to hire a car electrician to do the wiring for a 9-pin connector and install a break controller in the car. I would greatly appreciate if you could recommend the parts that we will need to purchase to have this work done in our car. Please find below some information regarding the camper, Aliner Tongue: 250lbs Total: 2,200lbs empty Electric Brakes description: The electric brake option on your camper is similar to the brakes on your towing vehicle, with the exception that the camper’s brakes are electromagnetic, while your towing vehicle’s brakes are hydraulic. When the brakes in the towing vehicle are activated, your controller determines how hard they are being pressed, and sends the appropriate current through the hitch wire to the brake assembly. As you depress the brake pedal, the controller sends more current to the electromagnet, and the brake shoes press harder into the brake drums, forcing the wheel to resist rotation. Releasing the brake pedal decreases the current to the brake assembly, allowing the wheel to spin freely. The brakes are self adjusting, but will need an initial manual adjustment after the first 200 miles. The brakes should be inspected every 3000 miles

Thanks for all the information and the picture! I would be happy to help you set up your 2019 Ford Escape to tow your new Aliner Expedition Camper. I did some research to confirm but your camper has the standard 7-way connector. 9-pin connectors are mainly used for semi's and agricultural applications.
Since your Escape already has a 4-flat connector the wiring harness you will need is the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit for Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 12 Gauge Wires item # ETBC7. The kit includes a pre-wired 7- and 4-way trailer connector that mounts easily at the rear of your Escape with an included bracket. This kit is designed for use on a vehicle with an existing 4-way flat trailer connector and plugs directly into it.
