Howdy. Why should you unplug the heater cord before starting the engine?

There is potential for damage to a block heater like the Kat's Heaters Custom Diesel Engine Block Heater part # KH30115 when you start the engine with the heater still plugged in therefore the block heater manufactures recommend against this. That's not to say the element will fail immediately if left plugged in while the engine is on but to minimize failure they do recommend first unplugging.
