Brake Controller and Trailer Wiring Setup for 1995 Dodge Ram 1500

Question:

I recently bought a 95 Dodge Ram 1500. As best as I can tell is that it has a factory hitch and a trans cooler. Under the dash right side of steering column, I found two plugs, that are mounted close to each other. One is rectangle with 6 wires and the other is more flat and has 2 wires. What type of brake control and wire setup will a need to pull a boat? My next question is at the hitch. What connect will I need to plug a boat with a flat 4 wire connector?

Congratulations on your new truck! Since brake controllers are for electric brakes, boat trailers generally do not have electric brakes due to them being used around water. You have a 4-wire connector on your boat trailer, so you would not have hydraulic brakes either, probably because it is light enough that they are not needed.

Under your dashboard, the 6-wire plug is for the brake controller, while the 2-wire plug is most likely for computer diagnostics. To use your boat trailer lights, you will need to install a T-One Vehicle Wiring harness with Four Pole Trailer Connector, part # 118329. We have an excellent video that shows this wiring harness being installed on a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500.

After installing the T-One wiring harness, simply plug in your boat trailer 4-flat connector into the 4-flat plug on the rear of your pickup. This will give you turn signals, brake and running lights.
