Can Tow Malone SeaWings Be Mounted Side-By-Side To Haul Two Kayaks On A 2018 Toyota 4Runner

Question:

We need to carry our 12foot Hobie Passport kayaks that are 33inch wide on our 2018 4Runner to go camping. Yakima has a 60inch model crossbar and Rhino-Rack has a 54inch locking model. If we use 2 Malone Seawings with load assist stingers side by side, can the cradles be attached wide enough apart that the keels will fit securely?

Yes, the Malone SeaWing Kayak Carrier and Load Assist w/ Tie-Downs - Rear Loading - Clamp On # MPG113MD can be placed side by side. We actually have a picture of this on the product page that I've also attached below. The carriers are 27-1/4" in width so I recommend going with the 60" Yakima Crossbars # Y00426 and # Y33TR to ensure a comfortable fit for both kayaks.

That being said, due to the design of your 12' Hobie Passport kayaks I do not recommend using the # MPG113MD. Since the cradles are in a "V" shape, that makes it ideal for kayak hulls (and not flat, wide SUPs). If you try to use a SUP with the SeaWing, it will not fit as snugly and can move during transportation.

Instead I recommend using a carrier like the Yakima JayLow Kayak Carrier w/ Tie-Downs - J-Style or Post Style - Folding - 1 or 2 Kayaks # Y04073. These J-style cradles let you transport 1 or 2 kayaks on your roof rack. The integrated ramps help you to load a kayak from the side of your vehicle. The padded arms fold down when not in use and will clamp to most crossbars without tools with 4 Tie-downs included. The capacity of this rack is 80lbs for 1 kayak and 110lbs for 2 kayaks, so if your kayaks surpass 55lbs each you'll need to use two racks.
