Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2003 Dodge Dakota Behind a Motor Home

Question:

I have the tow bar. After installing these adapters do I need to do anything else special to tow this vehicle behind my motor home since the truck is an automatic? If I need other products, please provide part numbers. Thank you.

There are 5 items you will need to flat tow a vehicle: base plates, tow bar, safety cables, lighting, and supplemental braking. With the tow bar and base plates out of the way we can focus on the rest. But before you do anything else consult the truck owners manual to determine if there are any special requirements, parts, or procedures to flat tow it. I was only able to find information on a 2004 so that may be different so checking your owners manual is key.

For safety cables I recommend # RM-643. The coiled design helps keep the cables off of the ground.

For lighting I recommend the universal diode kit # RM-154. This is a good permanent installation solution and once it is installed you will not have to do anything with it again when flat towing. I have linked a video showing a typical installation for you.

And finally, most states require a supplemental braking system in the vehicle being flat towed. The easiest system to set up and use is the Even Brake # RM-9400 proportional braking system. It applies the Dakota brakes in proportion to how much the tow vehicle is braking. This is the safest way to stop and it reduces wear and tear on both vehicles.

I have included a couple of helpful links on flat towing for you.
