Troubleshooting Light Colors Cycling When Adjusting Brake Power on Tekonsha Voyager

Question:

My truck has a Tekonsha controller on it, came on the truck used the sticker with the model number is worn off. Has a gain dial on the right and an unlabeled dial on the left. Sensitivity to the pedal press is sporadic when adjusting the gain dial- led goes from green to red to orange to green again all on one revolution of the dial. Do you think the sensor on my pedal is bad? Does that happen? If you think the controller is bad what do you recommend I buy? I pull a 6000lb boat and an 8000lb track hoe both on dual axle trailers. Every once and a while I pull a triple axle gooseneck so a controller with 3 presets would be nice.

Based on the description, it sounds like you have a Tekonsha Voyager # 39510. Before deciding on a replacement, there are a few things you can check. I would start by checking all of the connections on the brake controller wiring. One thing in particular that can cause a lot of problems is the ground connection. Make sure it is secure on a clean, bare-metal surface. If you have a plug in installation, disconnect and reconnect the plug to make sure it is seated properly.

You could also double check the wiring to make sure nothing is damaged and you don't have a short. Since it seems to be related to your brake pedal, I would specifically check the stop light circuit, which is the red wire that connects to the brake pedal switch.

One other thing is to make sure that the brake controller is level by running through the steps for leveling the sensor. Outside of leveling the sensor, you should not see the orange light, and only see a green light when the trailer is connected and a red light when the brake pedal or manual slide knob is activated with a trailer connected.

If this does not fix the problem it is more than likely a faulty unit. For a replacement, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Brake controller # 90195. This brake controller works for trailers with up to 4 axles and has 5 storable settings so it will be perfect for your 3 different trailers.
