The etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e98867 is the correct receiver for your 2018 Ford Explorer. This class III 2" receiver is rated for 400lbs of tongue weight and a trailer weight of 4,000lbs. With a weight distribution hitch capacities increase to 500lbs of tongue weight and 5,000lbs trailer weight.

The wiring is where things can be confusing. As your Explorer does have the correct connectors for the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness # C56306 as well as the Plug-In Wiring Adapter 3035-P to connect the Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195. You will have to take your Explorer to a Ford Dealership to have the computer flashed so that the brake controller and 7-way will work properly. I was told from Ford that this is typically a 30 minute process that if not done everything will appear to work but it just won't send the power to the trailer. The Curt No-Drill Bracket # C57202 will allow you to attach the Curt Mounting Bracket # C67UR

If you prefer not to have to take your Explorer to a dealership to have this done, you can use the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118540 Universal Installation Kit # ETBC7 and Brake Controller Pigtail # 20127 to attach the Draw-Tite I-Command Trailer Brake Controller # 5535. The installation kit does include a mounting bracket for the 7-way but you can still use the Curt No-Drill Bracket # C57202 to mount to the receiver cross tube.

The etrailer Ball Mount Kit # 989900 will include 2 ball mount with different rise and drops along with a 1-7/8" and 2" hitch ball with carry bag and 2 hitch pins for securing the ball mounts in your receiver.

If you are pulling a larger travel trailer or enclosed trailer a Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System # EQ37060ET would be the best route to go. This will also give you sway control as well as leveling your Explorer to reduce light steering and diminished braking caused by suspension sag. This particular Equal-i-zer system is rated for trailers up to 6,000lbs with a tongue weight of 200-600lbs. You will need a 1-7/8" 12pt Thin Walled Socket # ALL643216 to install the included 2" hitch ball. If your trailer has a 2-5/16" coupler you will need the 2-5/16" Hitch Ball # EQ91-00-6100 for your system.
