Why Are My Brakes So Sensitive when Using My Tekonsha Voyager Brake Conroller?

Question:

Ive had the Tekonsha Voyager installed on my 2010 Toyota Highlander for a few months now. Towed a few times with it. Although adjustment is a bit tricky, it has mostly worked normally. This morning when I plugged my trailer in and the vehicle was not moving, the light would turn bright red when I stepped on the brake pedal. When I barely crept forward and applied the brakes, the trailer brakes grabbed very hard. I backed off both the level and power adjusters almost as far as they would go, and I got the light to stay green when I applied the brake pedal while sitting still. But the brakes still grab pretty hard when Im just creeping forward and apply the brake pedal. Nothing changed since the last time I towed - same trailer, same load, same tow vehicle, settings not moved. The pictures show how far back I had to move the level and power adjusters to get the light to stay green while the vehicle was not moving. Im hesitant to tow right now because Im afraid the trailer brakes are going to lock up or overheat.

I am so sorry to hear about your Tekonsha Voyager # 39510 controller! One of the first things I suggest is to inspect the 7-way connecter you have on the vehicle side and the trailer side to see if there is any corrosion or debris in the pins. Also, it is important to inspect the wiring for frayed wiring and to make sure the ground wires are both attached properly.
