Troubleshooting Tekonsha Prodigy Brake Controller on 2009 Ford F150

Question:

Recently installed my controller on my newer truck. I previously used it on my 2003 F150 so I believe the controller is good. I connected the controller to the dash but unit is not working. Trailer lights do work. Are there any relays or fuses that I need to get for the truck? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

There are a couple things to check but it could be a fuse that needs to be replaced on your 2009 Ford F-150. The first thing you can check is the connectors on your truck and trailer, make sure they are free of debris and clean.

On the trailer connector test the pin at the 5 o'clock position with a circuit tester like the Circuit Tester Kit
# PTW2993. Have someone engage the manual lever on your Prodigy. If this tests out ok then your problem is on the trailer side, and you will need to inspect the wiring from the 7-way on back.

If you don't show any power when testing the 7-way then you will need to check the fuse. Checking an owner's manual online, it looks like the fuse for the brake controller is #33 in your fuse box. You will want to confirm this with your owner's manual.

If the fuse is fine check the power wire (black wire) to the controller and the wire from the controller to the 7-way Make sure they are in good shape and show no signs of damage or wear.

If this all tests out ok, you will need to check the brake controller itself.
