Which Roof Basket Will Fit A 2017 Toyota 4Runner With Factory Roof Rails?
Question:
Hi! I have a 2017 4Runner that I need to outfit a basket to carry cargo on the roof. I do not have the crossbars for the factory rails and I was wondering if there are any baskets that mount between the factory rails T-Connection I think? Assuming no, I have my eyes on the Surco Safari Rack 5.0 Aluminum with 250lb capacity. My questions are - 1 Mounting. Id like to keep it as close to the roof as possible so again, a mountable basket between the rails is idea but I have not come across one. It looks like the Safari 5.0 adapter kit would not raise the basket too much. Is everything I would need to mount in the kit P/N: *-1101? 2 Size. I could use the extra length with the S5072 but I am not sure if that will be too long that it will cover the moon roof and rear antenna. That would reduce it down to the S5060-1101 as being the largest option that wont interfere. However, Im wondering about S4550-1101 and whether it would fit between the rails. I am not sure if the 4Runner factory rails are a standard fitment T-rail, etc. or what the options are there. So, I think that is it. Id like to pull the trigger immediately but looking for your expert guidance before I do. Thanks in advance and I look forward to your thoughts/recommendations.

It sounds like you already did this, but you will want to first measure your roof and determine which size roof basket will fit and not interfere with your antenna. Based on what you said, it looks like the Surco Safari Rack 5.0 Rooftop Cargo Basket for Factory Rails - 60" Long x 50" Wide # SPS5060-1101 would fit your roof and suit your needs. This basket is designed to work with factory raised rails, so if that is what you have on your roof then it will work well for you. In regard to the Surco Safari Rack 5.0 Rooftop Cargo Basket for Factory Rails - 50" Long x 45" Wide # SPS4550-1101; this would also work as long as your roof rails are no more than 45" apart.
The Surco kits are low-profile and include everything necessary for installation onto your factory raised roof rails. Keep in mind, it is typically not recommended to operate your moonroof while a roof basket is installed. That said, some vehicles are still able to allow operation of the moonroof with a basket installed. I attached a demonstration video for you to check out.
If you do not have raised rails and actually have the flush-mount rails on your roof then you will instead want to go with a roof rack like Rhino-Rack Pioneer Platform Rack with Backbone Mounting System - 84" Long x 49" Wide # RR43AB.
