What is needed to Flat Tow 2001 Pontiac Sunfire

Question:

I am thinking of flat towing my 2001 Pontiac Sunfire behind my motorhome. Can my sunfire with the 5 speed manual transmission be flat towed without any modifications? I don’t have a owners manual to look it up. But it’s got the 2200 engine with 5 speed manual transmission.

A quick search online for a copy of the owners manual states that the 2001 Pontiac Sunfire can be flat towed without modification if you have a four-speed automatic or a five-speed manual transaxle. To flat tow a vehicle, you'll need a hitch on the motor home, a tow bar, a base plate kit installed on the tow vehicle, a tow bar wiring kit so that the taillights on the vehicle work along with those on the motor home, safety cables and a supplemental braking system.

Base Plate: I suggest the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit, # BX3226. This is available for the 2001 Pontiac Sunfire excluding the GT trim level.

Tow-Bar: etrailer SD Non-Binding Tow Bar for Roadmaster Crossbar-Style Base Plates - 2" RV Mount - 6K, # e47ZR. This has independent, self-supporting arms that won't fall to the ground when unfolded, and smooth operation allows for easy hookup and disconnect, even on unlevel ground. Has a built-in rise/drop and integrated cable mounting clips keep the included safety cables off the ground to prevent dragging.

Wiring: I suggest the Roadmaster 6-Diode Universal Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles with Separate Lighting, # 154-792-118158. This will connect your towed car's lighting system to your RV's to get the brake lights and turn signals required for towing. Designed for use with Pontiac Sunfires that have separate brake and turn signals.

Braking System: Blue Ox Patriot Portable Braking System - Proportional, # BLU37TR. This proportional system provides precise, responsive braking, allows you to conveniently adjust the braking force from the cab of your motorhome.
