I spoke to my contact at Roadmaster, he said the issue with the red light showing red, braking without braking on the Roadmaster Even Brake Portable Supplemental Braking System # RM-9400 was not uncommon. He said it was the inertia switch kicking in because the motorhome is slowing down.
For the braking too hard he said your vehicle may have active braking. To check if it has active braking get in the vehicle, no keys in the ignition and motor off, and pump the brakes 5-10 times. If the pressure as you pump stays soft you have active braking and can not use the even brake. If it stays hard and rigid, it does not have active braking and you can use the even brake.
Active braking, or continuous power assist, works even when the ignition is off and applies braking to the vehicle when it senses a collision. Since the active braking system is already in place can use the even brake and would need a different supplemental braking system.
If you can give me the Year, Make and Model of the vehicle you are towing I can give you a recommendation for a compatible braking system for the vehicle.
