Weight Distribution and Trailer Brake Connection for 2021 Tesla Model Y

Question:

I want to tow an inTech Explore with a Tesla Model Y. The weight in within range but the tongue weight is possibly over. I could consider the inTech Pursue. With either of these would a WDH help, and do I need trailer brakes connected to the car? Any help would be appreciated as I research to have a safe and fun set up.

If you want to tow with your 2021 Tesla Model Y I would start by recommending the # DT58MR Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2". This hitch has a 3,500 lbs towing capacity and a tongue weight of 525 lbs. The tongue weight on this hitch will be the limiting factor.

I would recommend a weight distribution hitch, but there are no hitches for the 2021 Tesla Model Y that are compatible with one. That being said, you would still be limited to the 525 lbs tongue weight of the Draw-Tite. If you are concerned that you will go over this with the Explore, I would consider the Pursue like you said. You also need to consider what you will be carrying in the travel trailer because that can add to the tongue weight. Since you are towing with an EV your range will be reduced, so the lighter of the two options will also help with that.

If your trailer has electric brakes, you will need wiring and a brake controller. For wiring I recommend the Tekonsha # 119250KIT. You will also need the # ETBC7 Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat - 10 Gauge Wires. This universal installation kit will give you the 7-way connection necessary for trailer brakes.

For a brake controller, I recommend the # C51180 Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller. This proportional controller plugs in line with your 7-way connection and is controlled through your smartphone via Bluetooth.
