Question:
If you run a 10 ga wire to the positive post do you also need to run a wire from the negative pin to the negative post on the battery

In regards to wiring a seven way trailer connector, the twelve volt power wire or otherwise known as the battery charge line circuit will need to be run from the trailer connector to the positive terminal of the battery. The ground wire circuit from the trailer connector does not need to be run to the negative battery terminal, it can just be ground to the frame or body. I recommend the 7-Way Install Kit part # ETBC7 which comes with everything you need. The duplex wire has two ten gauge wires, one will run to the battery and the other to the brake controller in the vehicle acting as the brake output wire, not the ground.
