Will Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver C13381 Fit A 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan

Question:

Hi there, Two questions for you folks: 1 I have a 2021 VW Tiguan SE. I want to buy a hitch receiver primarily for a bike rack but also for the occasional use of a utility trailer. I was all set to buy the C13381 when it suddenly disappeared from the compatibility list for my car. Was a fit problem found with the 2021 model of the car? Right now Im looking at the C12177 as an alternative. It looks like it will work although I really wanted a 2inch receiver if possible. Is this still my best option? 2 I think I would need a ball mount with a riser to accommodate a typical utility trailer. Is this true and, if so, which would you recommend? Thanks a lot for your help

First the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13381 is indeed confirmed to fit your 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan. The reason it was pulled down as a confirmed fit for a bit was due to the 2021 Tiguan requiring mounting hardware where the 2020 and older used factory hardware. Curt realized this issue and is now including the hardware with the # C13381 so it can be installed on your Tiguan.

Between the # C13381 and # C12177 you were looking at I recommend the # C13381 as it has a 2" receiver which is much more desirable when it comes to accessories like a bike rack or ball mount as you will have more options than the 1-1/4" receiver of the # C12177.

When we installed the # C13381 on a similar 2020 Tiguan we found from the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver measures 12-1/4" so you are correct that you will more than likely need a ball mount with rise. To determine how much rise you need you will need to measure from the ground to the bottom of the coupler of your trailer. The difference between this measurement and the 12-1/4" will determine how much rise or drop you need.

If you do not have a trailer then your best bet is the etrailer Ball Mount Kit # 989900 due to it including two hitch balls, 1-7/8" and 2", and two ball mounts, one with a 1" rise, and one with a 3" rise, so you will have plenty of options compatible with most trailers.

To complete your towing setup you will also need a vehicle wiring harness # 118811.

Lastly if you do not already have a bike rack I recommend taking a look at the Thule Hitching Post Pro - Folding Tilting 4 Bike Rack w Anti-Sway - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches # TH934XTR which will accommodate four bikes weighing up to 35lbs each. This rack includes anti sway cradles to keep the bikes from moving around and hitting each other while you are on the road, and the rubber coating will protect the frames on your bikes from getting scratched or damaged.

I included videos for each of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.
