Can 3500lb Axle W/ 89" Hub Face and 74" Spring Center Be Replaced W/ 5200lb Axle W/ Same Dimensions?

Question:

I currently have a SA trailer with Dexter 3712916 Axle 89/74 3500#. Can I replace my beam with this one, directly, for a beefier axle? Will my hubs/brakes, etc that are on my 3500# work with this 5200#?

Since the Dexter 3500lb axle on your single axle trailer has a hub face measurement of 89" and a spring center measurement of 74" the Dexter Trailer Axle Beam with E-Z Lube Spindles - 89" Long - 5,200 lbs will work as a direct replacement.

You will not be able to reuse our hubs/brakes or U-bolts as this axle uses different bearings than your current axle, and is 3" in diameter where your current axle is 2-3/8" in diameter.

For hub and drum assemblies you will need # 8-201-5UC3-EZ which uses inner bearing # 25580 and outer bearing # LM67048, and for braking assemblies you will need # AKEBRK-7-D. Hubs for 5200lb axles use the 6 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern where your current axle uses the 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern so you will also need to replace your wheels. If you can let me know what size your current wheels/tires are I would be happy to recommend replacements.

For a new U-bolt kit you will need the # APUBR-8.

Lastly keep in mind that replacing your axle with one that has a higher rating will not increase the capacity of your trailer as you are still limited by the lowest rated component which is now the frame.

I included videos of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.
