Solution For Carrying 2 Kayaks On A 2017 Acura RDX With Factory Crossbars
Question:
I am looking for the ability to transport 2 kayaks each @ 40 lbs on my 2017 Acura RDX. Does the Rhino J-Style rack work with this car? The crossbars are factory installed. Also, my wife and I are short and I am a bit concerned about getting the kayaks up over the lip of the J. What are your thoughts?

Helpful Expert Reply:
I contacted Rhino-Rack regarding their J-Style Kayak Carrier # S510 and they were not able to confirm fitment with the factory roof rack on 2017 Acura RDX. It likely would fit your roof but I cannot guarantee it.
Either way, I think a better option is the Malone DownLoader Kayak Carrier with Tie-Downs - J-Style - Folding - Side Loading # MPG114MD. This has a built-in ramp on the side which allows you to easily slide the kayak up and onto the J-style carrier. This is for one kayak so you will need a second one as well. This carrier fits crossbars that are up to 3-1/2" wide and up to 1-3/4" tall, so you will want to measure your crossbars to ensure fitment.
While this kayak carrier already easier than the Rhino-Rack J carrier, you can also add a load assist # MPG351XL that connects to the Malone Downloader; this uses ratcheting arms to help lift the kayak onto the roof. The lift assist can be transferred between downloaders so you only need one of the assists. I attached a demonstration video for you.
