Can I Tow Two Trailers?

Question:

I currently just tent it when I go camping because I want to take our ATVs as well. I was wondering if it is legal to have a hitch welded/mounted to my 4 place ATV trailer and tow a tent trailer behind it. I have never seen it done but was thinking since a tent trailer is short and light weight it might be an option. thanks for the advice.

There are several things to consider when it comes to double towing.

First, make sure it is legal in the areas you will be driving. In the west and midwest it is gererally allowed. Most states on the eastern seaboard do not allow it. Even if it is allowed, there may be certain requirements and restrictions state to state.

Next, the second trailer will need to be lightweight so as not to require brakes. Generally, if a trailer has brakes you should be using them.

Next, you will need to contact the manufacturer of your first trailer to find out if a tow hitch can be installed and what weight the trailer is rated to tow. Most of the time they will tell you that it is not rated to tow anything.

If all of this passes review and your trailer frame spacing is 22" to 72" wide, you can use the Curt # 13703 hitch. You will also need wiring for the trailer lights on the second trailer. You could use the Curt # C58044 kit to splice into the first trailer's system. You may also need to condsider LED lighting for your trailers if you find that the additional lights are dragging down your electrical system.
