Can 50lb Cargo Carrier and 150lbs Of Cargo Be Added To Road Master Spare Tire Carrier?

Question:

I have a 500 lb hitch tongue weight and would like to add cargo carrier to the Roadmaster carrier. I need help with determining how much weight I can add to the carrier. My 500 lb Hitch -33 reduction in capacity = 335 lbs remain. 335 -40 lbs for carrier -75 lbs for Tire = 220 lbs remaining on my hitch after adding the Roadmaster and Spare Tire. Do I have the full 200 lbs tongue weight of the Roadmaster tire carrier to add a cargo carrier that weighs about 50 lbs and have 150 lbs left for gear?

Expert Reply:

Since your trailer hitch receiver has a 500lb tongue weight rating, and using the Roadmaster Spare Tire Carrier # RM-195125 will reduce the capacities by 33% you are correct that you are left with 335lbs of tongue weight capacity on your receiver.

Since the # RM-195125 weighs 44lbs and the spare tire weighs 75lbs that leaves your receiver with about 215lbs of tongue weight left, so you will be able to use the full 200lb tongue weight rating of the tire carrier without an issue.

You mentioned that your cargo carrier is right at 50lbs, so you will have exactly 150lbs of capacity for any cargo you need to bring along.

I included a video of the # RM-195125 for you to take a look at.
