Parts Needed to Add a 7-Way Trailer Connector and Brake Controller to a 1972 Chevrolet Pickup

Question:

There is no 4 way connector or anything on my truck and i want to add a 7 pin trailer connector along with trailer brakes to my truck. I am not very good at wiring so I wanted to know a step by step procedure and or a part that would help me in this. Thanks a lot

We have everything that you will need to add a 7-way trailer connector and a brake controller for trailer brakes to your 1972 Chevrolet pickup. You will need a 4-Way Wiring Kit, # 18252, the 7-way and 4-way Installation Kit, # ETBC7, and a brake controller, I recommend the Prodigy P2, # 90885.

The first thing to do is to install the 4-way wiring kit, # 18252. This kit includes a wiring harness with a 4-flat trailer connector, a circuit tester and 4 quick splices. To install this wiring harness, you will need to access the tail light wiring at both tail light assemblies. This can be done by either removing your tail light assemblies or using the circuit tester to test the wires on the underside of your vehicle for the tail light circuits.

If you are able to remove your tail light assemblies, use the circuit tester to test the wires going into the tail lights. You should have one wire that carries the tail light circuit and one wire that carries both the turn signal and brake light. The brown wire will attach to the tail light wire, the green wire will attach to the right turn signal and brake light wire and the yellow wire will attach to the left turn signal and brake light wire. To make it easier, you can use the included quick splices to attach the wiring harness to your tail light wires.

Once you have the 4-flat wiring harness installed, you will install the ETBC7 kit. This kit includes everything you will need to install a 7-way connector on your truck. The included connector also has a 4-way connection giving you the ability to tow different types of trailers without the need of an adapter. You will notice that the vehicle in the video is a Suburban and not a pickup truck, but the installation process will be the same since these items are not vehicle specific.
