How to Install 7-Way Trailer Connector on 2017 Jeep Wrangler JK Without Tow Package

Question:

Ok I’ll try and explain as best as I can I have a 2017 jeep jk wrangler and a jayco RV to both tow the same trailer . I bought a tekonsha prodigy 902502 so as to only need 1 brake controller. The RV has a 7 blade so no problems there my jeep however did not come with factory towing and need it to be 7 blade for the trailer brakes I have a hopkins 42145 multi tow . What do I need to get this wired to my Jeep is there a simple plug and play solution ? Thx

Your 2017 JK Wrangler won't have the connector at the rear for the # 42145 unless it was equipped with the factory tow package. No worries, though. We can make this happen with a minimum of hassle, though it's not quite plug-and-play.

You'll first need to access the taillight circuits of the Wrangler using a T-Connector like # 118416. To convert that over to a 7-way, you'll need our 7-way upgrade kit for wireless brake controllers, part # ETBC7L. The kit includes an adapter to convert the 4-pole supplied by the # 118416 to a 7-way. The adapter will have 4 additional wires, 2 of which you won't need. The white wire needs to ground to the Jeep's frame or chassis, and the black wire would be extended to the front of the vehicle to connect with the positive battery terminal via a circuit breaker installed next to the battery. This circuit is what provides power to the Tekonsha # TK94FR Prodigy RF controller. The wire, necessary hardware and the circuit breaker are included with the kit.

The wiring needed for the upgrade kit is minimal, and pretty simple as you can see in the video I've linked for you. I've also linked to an install video for the # 118416 as well as a video showing a typical install for the Prodigy RF controller.
