Flat Tow Battery Disconnect and Charge Line Options

Question:

Hello, I just read this article Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2013 Ford Explorer It was super helpful and I appreciate it. My question is what is available to avoid the battery from being drained in the vehicle being towed since the key is to be left in the accessory position. Thanks for your help

Many vehicles need the battery to be disconnected in order to flat tow, this prevents the battery from draining. In some cases, the manufacturer requires to prevent specific features on the vehicle from operating while being towed. With other vehicles, the battery being disconnected is not required and some even need to have the battery connected for safe towing, there is not a single situation that covers all vehicles evenly, this is why you must check your specific vehicles owner's manual for flat towing.

One option is to install an automatic disconnect like # RM-766. See the attached video for product review and installation. This will conveniently disconnect your battery so that your vehicle can be flat towed per manufacturer instructions. System with switch charges your towed car's battery during towing to prevent dead battery and maintain charge for accessories.

Installing a charge line kit on the motorhome, such as # RM-156-25 on vehicle, see the attached video for installation on 2015 Ford Explorer; another option is # RM-156-75.
