How To Flat Tow Jeep Wrangler JK with AEV Front Bumper Using Blue Ox Base Plate Kit
Question:
I got your info from a friend who you had helped previously so I hope I’m reaching out to the right person. I’ve got a 2017 Jeep Wrangler JK I am looking to purchase a complete Flat tow set up for, my primary question is in regard to the AEV Front Bumper I am planning to use. I see that Blue Ox makes a base plate BX1133 that is essentially a spreader bar that connects the two D Ring points. AEV states that the bumper is rated to tow from the D ring points is there a set up that would work safely without purchasing that blue ox adapter ? Thank you for any assistance you can provide…

Yes, you can flat tow your 2017 Jeep Wrangler JK, that has a AEV front bumper, using a Blue Ox # BX1133 Base Plate Kit, as long as your Jeep has the bolt on tabs as shown on page 4 of the Blue Ox installation instructions attached.
Most Jeep owners pair the Blue Ox base plate with the Blue Ox # BX7420 Tow Bar. This tow bar kit is heavy duty and will perform in most terrain and work with loads up to 10,000 pounds. It also comes with safety cables.
For lighting you can use the diode kit, # RM-15267, and not have to worry about cutting into the taillight housing. This will splice into your taillight wiring to allow your tow vehicle to control the taillight assemblies of the towed vehicle. This comes with a round 6-way connector that you will install on the front of your towed vehicle and enough coiled wire to go from there to the RV.
You may need a high/low hitch adapter. I have attached an article and a list of adapters available.
Your Jeep weighs in about 4000 to 5000 pounds so you will need a supplemental braking system installed in it. This will improve braking and handling, and extend the life of your coaches braking system. Additionally, most states require supplemental braking if your towed vehicle is over 3000 pounds. If your coach has traditional hydraulic brakes then I recommend the Brake Buddy # HM39524 portable system that has proportional braking and has a wireless display for your cab so you can see your braking system status or change profiles from your driver's seat.
If your coach has air brakes, then instead of the Brake Buddy system, you will need the Demco # DM26VR supplemental braking system for air brakes.
I have attached an article below about supplemental braking systems
