Can I use the Noco Genius5 while my trailers own converter remains connected to the battery?

Question:

I have a Casita travel trailer with an older Magnetek 6325 converter. It is a 30+ year old converter, is still functional, but has a very rudimentary battery charging circuit that tends to overcharge batteries if left plugged in to 110VAC. Id like to use the NOCO Genius 5 to keep my battery in good shape. Can I leave both the Magnatek converter and the Noco attached to my battery? Also, Is there a simple way to have the battery supply power to the Magnatek panel while not letting the Magnatek send power to the battery? A diode?

I reached out to my contact at NOCO and they do not recommend having your trailer charger/converter charging the battery at the same time as the NOCO is charging the battery. They feel it could overcharge and damage the battery. I did not mention that you already had concerns about your old charger overcharging. When your onboard charger is not working the NOCO would be an excellent way to keep your battery charged as it will turn off/on as needed to keep the battery topped off. I don't have a tested method for installing a diode as described.

The better solution may be to replace the converter/charger section in your power center. The replacement part for your current equipment is no longer available, however you might consider working out something with the Progressive Dynamics # PD9130 converter charger.

Others in your situation have decided to replace the entire power center with something like the Progressive Dynamics # PD4135K. This will require some careful electric work and may need some "help" to be fitted into the old power center area.
