Any brake controller would work for the Dexter 12x2 brake assembly you mentioned. A proportional controller like the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite, part # RED44FR would be a great choice. A proportional controller features internal sensors that can determine how quickly the tow vehicle is braking. The controller will then send the proper amount of voltage to the trailer brakes so that the trailer and the tow vehicle brake at the same rate for safe, effective and predictable braking.
What sets the Tow-Pro Elite apart from other brake controllers is how it installs in the vehicle. Rather than using a box that bolts to the underside of the dashboard, the Tow-Pro Elite has a control box that mounts under the dash, out of sight. The only control needed is the control knob that can be mounted anywhere within the driver's reach, by drilling through the dash, console or an un-used switch knockout.
Depending on the year, make and model of the tow vehicle, there might be a plug and play wiring harness available which would greatly simplify the installation.
If you'd care to reply with the year, make and model of vehicle, I'd be happy to recommend a harness if one is available.
I've linked to a video showing a typical installation.
