When it comes to transmission coolers, unless you live in an extremely cold climate you can't over cool a transmission. Most vehicles will have a stock transmission cooler, it'll either have a separate heat exchanger or
it'll have a cooling circuit in the vehicle's radiator. This typically does a pretty decent job unless the vehicle is being pushed to its limits by towing near its capacity or in hilly areas. Having the factory cooler act at a pre-cooler and the aftermarket cooler installed inline with the return line back to the transmission offer additional cooling in a very efficient manner.
I'll link you to an article about transmission coolers. I hope you'll find it helpful.
