is a converter required for wiring trailer brake lights from a 2004 dodge ram 1500

For the 2004 Dodge Ram without the factory installed trailer connector, yes you will need a convertor. This converter adapts vehicles with separate turn and stop lights (3-Wire System) to standard trailer tail light wiring (2-Wire System). In a three wire system, a separate wire is used to carry each of the stop, turn, and running light functions to the tail light assembly. On most trailers, the stop and turn signal functions are sent through the same wire.
I suggest the Curt # C55504 T-Connector for a 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, this includes a tail light converter to ensure that your vehicle's wiring matches that of your trailer. This provides a 4-way flat trailer connector to power your trailer's signal lights and is compatible with 5-pole, 6-pole and 7-pole adapters (sold separately) if needed for the trailer you are towing.
I also recommend you purchase the mounting bracket 4-Pole flat # 18144.
