Trailer Hitch Options for a 2002 Mitsubishi Galant To Carry a 2 Inch Bike Rack
Question:
I have a 2002 mitsubishi galant with spoiler and an allen bike rack model 645RR that we use on our chevy blazer, however I want to get a hitch put on my mitsubishi so I can use the rack on the car, however I noticed the hitch that was recommended for my galant was a 1 1/4inch and the bike rack is a 2inch any suggestions? Thank you for your help. Also my husband told me that uhaul might be able to install one.

At this time the only trailer hitch available for your 2002 Mitsubishi Galant is the Curt Class I Trailer Hitch, # C11248. As you mentioned, class I trailer hitches only come with a 1-1/4 inch receiver. The best option for you would be to look into a class I compatible bike rack.
There are trailer hitch adapters available that will allow you to use a 2 inch hitch mounted accessory with a 1-1/4 inch hitch, like part # HTAD, but they also reduce the tongue weight capacity of the hitch by half. Which means you will be limited to carrying a maximum of 100 lbs on the trailer hitch. This includes the weight of the bikes and the bike rack.
Also, it is not recommended to carry more than 2 bikes at a time with a class I trailer hitch. Adding a third or fourth bike will put more weight further away from the trailer hitch creating addition stress that could damage not only the trailer hitch, but the vehicle frame where the hitch is mounted. It is similar to using a pipe extension on a wrench to break a rusty bolt.
If you are interested in a class I compatible bike rack, then I would recommend looking at the Swagman Trailhead 2 Bike Rack, # S63360. This bike rack is also available in a 3 bike versions, # S63365, and a 4 bike version, # S63380. Keep in mind, you can only carry two bikes when using a bike rack with a class I trailer hitch. The Trailhead bike racks are compatible with both 1-1/4 inch and 2 inch trailer hitch receivers and tilt forward giving you full access to the trunk of your vehicle.
I have attached a video review of this bike rack for you to check out.
