Compatibility of 5-Pole Connector on Honda Pilot with 4-Pole Trailer or Accessory Connector
Question:
My Honda Pilot has a 5-Pin trailer wiring... will the 4-Pin on this Hitch Light still work? Another question - I have a Pacific Trailer to tow my 21foot boat and the trailer does not have any Electrical Brakes, but it is currently wired with a 5-Pin? I wired my Honda Pilot with a 5-Pin also, but I wanted to know if ALL 4-Pin products are compatible with my 5-Pin vehicle hook up. I was thinking about getting the Temporary Magnetic Trailer Lights 4-Pin as an emergency back up, just in case my actual trailer lights goes out. Please advise.

The Pilot Light-Up Hitch Cover, part # CR-007 would be compatible with your 5-pole connector, assuming that the 5-pole on your Pilot is wired to standard, with the fifth pin carrying the reverse light circuit. Any 4-pole accessory should be able to plug into your vehicle-side 5-pole, but if the plug on the accessory is fully-shrouded, you might need to trim a bit of the shroud off of the plug (see provided photo). This can easily be done with a sharp utility knife.
If your boat trailer uses a 5-pole, it probably uses a hydraulic or surge coupler to actuate the brakes. The extra circuit on the 5-pole will typically lock out the coupler when the vehicle is shifted into reverse so you can back the trailer without actuating the trailer brakes.
Using a magnetic light kit like # RM-2120 for an emergency back-up is an excellent idea. I should do that with my PWC trailer.
