Recommended Replacement Electric Brake Assemblies for 7K Capacity Axles

Question:

Hello, I have a gooseneck flatbed trailer with 7,000 lb. axels and I need to replace the electric brakes. I was wondering if you had a kit with four brakes in it as my trailer currently has brakes on all four wheels? If not, could you recommend which brakes would be best if I were to buy 2 of the brake kits? Hope this makes sense... thank you for your help!

Your 7K axles would use a 12 x 2 inch electric brake assemblies. I'd recommend going with self-adjusting brake assemblies like part # AKEBRK-7-SA. Once installed, the assemblies can be manually adjusted for the first time, or you can take the trailer to a large empty parking lot and complete about 20 braking events at 20+ mph. This will place the brakes into proper adjustment and keep them properly adjusted. The brake assemblies are sold in pairs, so if you have a tandem axle trailer, you'd need two sets.

The mounting hardware isn't included, as most folks will reuse the old hardware. New hardware, enough for 2 brake assemblies is available as part # BRKH12.

You'll also want to closely examine the armature surface of the inside of the brake drum where the magnet rides. If this surface is grooved, you'll also want to replace the drums for optimal brake performance.

A 7K axle would typically use an 8 on 6-1/2 bolt pattern. To choose the correct replacement drums, you'll need to choose a replacement that's compatible with your existing inner and outer wheel bearing and wheel stud diameter. You can use a digital caliper like # PTW80157 to measure the wheel stud diameter of your current hubs. The bearing reference numbers will be etched into the sides of the bearing cages. I'll link to our selection of 7K axle compatible hub/drums. Just use the filters on the left side of the page to choose inner bearing number, outer bearing number and the wheel stud diameter, and you'll be shown the compatible hub drums.
