Trailer Light Kit For 2016 Volvo V60
Question:
Hi I am renting a 13 foot tear trailer. I already have a 2 square hitch installed on my volvo wagon. The owner of the rental says I need a ball hitch, which I have found and also a 4 pin connection or 8 pin if I want to charge battery connector for trailer lights. Any recommendations?

You can use a ball mount such as MaxxTow Tri-Ball Mount for 2" Hitches - Hollow, Black Powder Coated Shank - Chrome Balls # MT70021. This comes with a 1-7/8" ball, a 2" ball, and a 2-5/16" ball and fits a 2" receiver. For the trailer wiring you will want to get Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C56287. This will simply connect to the factory tail light wiring and requires no splicing; you will need to connect the white wire to ground and the black wire to the positive terminal on your vehicle's battery. This will give you a basic 4 pole connection to power the trailer lights.
If you wish to maintain the trailer's battery while driving then you can add a kit to convert your 4 way to a 7 way plug, which is probably what they meant when they said 8 pin. Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat - 10 Gauge Wires # ETBC7 is the kit you will need. This will connect to the 4 way plug mentioned above, then you will ground the white wire to your vehicle and connect the black wire to your vehicle's positive battery terminal. This will provide your trailer connector with the necessary 7 way plug and 12v power for the trailer's battery.
I have attached demonstration videos for these products.
