Does a Tekonsha Proportional Braking Controller Require a Pressure Transducer?
Question:
I have a 1999 F-350 Superduty V-10 with the factory towing package installed. I want to upgrade my controller to a proportional controller. Do I need to install a pressure transducer for the brake controller? How does it sense the vehicles braking power to match?

Expert Reply:
Proportional brake controllers like the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885, use a motion-sensing accelerometer to detect the level of deceleration in your tow vehicle and then instantaneously transmit a proportional braking signal to the electric (or electric-over-hydraulic) brakes on your trailer. (You do not need a pressure transducer with an electric brake controller, though these were required with very early generation hydraulic-type controllers.)
I have included an article concerning installation of an aftermarket brake controller in a full-size Ford truck like your F-350 Superduty that you might find useful. I also included a video showing the installation process in a 2000 F-250, which is the most comparable vehicle to yours among those in our installation video library. You will also need the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Ford, part # 3035-P.
Instructions for all referenced parts are included.
