Is Using High Low Adapter Good Idea Instead of Large Rise/Drop Ball Mount

Question:

Hi there. I have a question about a hitch riser Roadmaster 048-10 with a 10k lb towing capacity and 400 lb tongue weight. I’m using in conjunction with a CURT 4” riser rated at 6000lbs and 600 lb tongue weight to ensure my 2018 VW Atlas can tow my 26” high Jayco 184BS Baja edition. My Atlas’ hitch is only 12-13” off the found. So I need about 14” total of rise. Is this set up dangerous? Or do the weight ratings still hold?

When you use a hitch adapter like the Roadmaster High Low Adapter RM-048-0 you end up cutting the capacity of the hitch it's installed in by half due to added leverage and movement. So this is not an ideal solution for anyone but when you are close to the vehicle's towing capacity it's not a viable option that's safe either.

The ball mount we carry that has the most rise is the Convert a Ball # AMSC12 which has a rise of 10-3/4 inches. It can be confusing where exactly to measure to determine the correct rise/drop ball mount so what I would do is verify for sure what it is you are in need of. Measure from the top of the hitch opening down to the ground and then measure from the bottom lip of your coupler to the ground and whatever the difference is between these two dimensions is the amount of rise/drop you'd need.
