Bike Rack For 2 E-Bikes, On The Back Of A 2018 Jeep Wrangler JK Being Flat Towed
Question:
I am looking for a bike carrier for 2 ebikes. Both weigh approx 50lbs each. I want to attach this to a jeep wrangler that is pulled by my motorhome. I have now noticed that some of your bike racks say no flat tow or no motorhome. Can you explain what that means. Also, which bike carriers would you recommend. I would probably need an extension on the hitch to clear the spare tire Thanks

You are correct that there are some bike racks designed for flat towing and some that are not. For your 2018 Jeep JK Wrangler, I recommend Lets Go Aero V-Lectric Bike Rack for 2 Electric Bikes - 2" Hitches - Wheel Mount Item # LGA77FR. This bike rack is designed for flat towed vehicles, accommodates E-bikes and has a weigh capacity of up to 75lbs per bike. The lower mount for the bikes can be secured in different locations on the double tubes to allow you to fit the rack and bikes to the vehicle. The rack, when the bikes are loaded, can be slid back to allow access to the rear door.
The reason some bike racks cannot be used on a motor home or towed vehicle is because a motor home and a vehicle being towed by another vehicle will have more sway at the back. A bike rack that is mounted on the back of an RV or vehicle that is being towed by another vehicle needs to be able to handle the extra sway the vehicles create. They are designed with a stiffer support structure to accommodate that extra movement created by the motor home or second vehicle.
It is not recommended to add an extension on a hitch, for a bike rack on a vehicle being flat towed. The reason for this is when you add an extension you lower the tongue weight of the hitch by half. When you add an extension, you not only have movement at the receiver tube on the hitch but the movement of the bike rack while in the extension adds extra side to side pressure on the hitch receiver tube, which could potentially damage the hitch and make it unsafe for use.
